Mechnical Engineer - Group Leader

POSITION SUMMARY


Leads as knowledge expert in the mechanical design, development, prototyping, and manufacturing support of lithium-ion batteries, chargers, and energy storage solutions. Leads and oversees activities of the Mechanical Engineering team (3-6 members).
 

JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Leads, directs, assign, and oversees the activities of the Mechanical Engineering Team on day-to- day tasks toward project delivery
  • Reports project and mechanical team status, including resource requests, to the Engineering Director
  • Support developing department capabilities through the definition and execution of training plans
  • Interpret, implement, and monitor modifications to mechanical engineering department methods, processes, and policies that affect multiple work groups.
  • Works with Project Leads, Group Leads, and Engineering Director to ensure timely delivery of project deliverables.
  • Identify and procure improved design and analysis tools and services (FEA, CFD, etc).
  • Act as a representative in cross-functional meetings to maintain coordination between the Mechanical Engineering and leadership of other functional organizations (Manufacturing, Test, Procurement, Sales, Production) in handoff of product from prototype to series-production.
  • Establish a culture of learning, openness, and accountability.
 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides technical guidance to members of the various engineering teams, and management.
  • Participates in the design reviews of mechanical concepts, drawings, and designs of team members.
  • Design and draft parts, prints, and assemblies using Solid Works.
  • Design and dimension plastic parts (injection molded) and metal parts (stamped, bent and/or welded parts), according to company standards and project requirements.
  • Prepare drawings from concept to support all phases of product development lifecycle, including quotation, prototyping, design iteration, and mass production.
  • Contribute to a multi-disciplinary product development team.
  • Lead and/or participate in the validation of internal and outsourced components and assemblies.
  • Provide technical expertise and consulting to customers and suppliers.
  • Collaborate with Project Leads, Purchasing, Production, and Quality departments during all stages of project development.
  • Prepare and maintain production documentation for parts and assemblies, such as bills of material (BOM).
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation as needed.
  • Collaborate with Quality department in the development of project functional specifications, such as DFMEA, FMEA and design qualification documents (PPAP, etc.).

MINIMUM ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. Mechanical, Manufacturing Engineering, or similar. Masters preferred.
  • More than 5 years of experience in automotive, industrial, medical, or aerospace (or similar) design for manufacturing and automation, or demonstrated skills & core competency.
  • Experience with electronics manufacturing for consumer, medical, telecom, and/or military industries is preferred.
  • Skilled in GD&T, Solidworks, FEA (structural and thermal) and CFD- (preferred), MS Office products, and problem solving methodologies including, but not limited to, 5-Why, 8-D, Is-Is Not, cause and effect ("ishikawa" or "fishbone").
  • Strong knowledge in design for manufacturing/assembly and automation.
  • Mechanical design aptitude and technical experience with plastic injection molded parts.
  • Strong quantitative, design, analytical, and problem solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work with others toward a shared goal, participating actively, sharing responsibility and rewards, and contributing to the capability of the team.
  • More than 3 years daily experience designing with SolidWorks
  • Travel up to 10%, domestic and international.
  • Occasional evening phone calls with global team (Poland, Germany, China).

While performing the duties of this job, the Mechanical Engineer Group Leader will frequently and may, for long periods of time perform CAD operations and other desktop functions. Vision abilities required. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Core working hours are per the office schedule, typically 9:00 am to 5:00 pm EST., Monday through Friday; occasional overtime and weekend hours will be required. The noise levels in some manufacturing facilities frequently may exceed the normal dBA. Work conditions in the manufacturing facilities may include elevated noise levels requiring hearing protection. While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be exposed to some mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock.
The employee may be required to occasionally wear PPE such as safety glasses and possibly hearing protection, as well as proper grounding equipment to eliminate the chance of electrostatic discharge.
